My Sister’s Books, which opened in 2002, is located in one of the country’s oldest resort communities – Pawleys Island, SC. The store is the realization of a dream for sisters Fran Clarkson and Bess Long. After both completed careers in the U.S. Navy, they founded My Sister's Books specializing in used paperbacks and books on CD, a bookstore that caters to locals and visitors alike.
My Sister’s Books houses more than 47,000 books in a variety of categories: romance, mystery, classics, children’s, young adult, biographies and history. If you’re looking for works by local and regional authors, you’ll find a great selection of those as well.
At My Sister’s Books, you can purchase new books or trade in your gently-read paperbacks and audio books for the next title on your list. Our staff prides themselves on being able to make recommendations, seek out hard-to-find titles, and suggest other authors based on your preferred genre.
Many reading groups consider My Sister’s Books their headquarters for picking up reasonably-priced copies of their scheduled reads. If you’re looking for reading group suggestions, please visit! If you want hardbacks or eBooks, just click on ORDER ONLINE at the top of this page.
Thank you for making My Sister’s Books a local success story!
Fran Clarkson, co-owner, is the one with this great idea. Everywhere she has lived she found the used bookstore. So now that she plans to retire in Pawleys she wanted to make sure we had a paperback store. She is the one that reads all the books so we can call them “used.”
Bess Long is the sister who likes to sell books. When the store first opened in 2002, her goal was to read at least one title by a number of diverse authors; now she focuses on her favorites in the “intrigue” and “cozy mysteries” genres. Want to give Bess a challenge? Tell her you’ve read everything by a particular author and see what she can find for you. Bess also enjoys working with reading groups to find interesting and engaging books, month after month.
Pat Latshaw was My Sister’s Books first employee in 2002. She came to us with 23 years of experience as a high school librarian and media services director in Springfield, OH. When Pat’s not at the book store, she likes to visit her extended family in Ohio and take Hawaiian cruises with her husband. Pat is our champion when it comes to organizing books and updating inventory, so if you’re looking for something special, just ask her where to find it. Pat’s particular favorites are mysteries and Christian fiction. “I like authors who are good storytellers,” she explains.
Linda McElroy also has been with us since 2003 and is accused of being a sister. Danielle Steel is Linda’s favorite author, along with Rowling, the Harry Potter author. She is great in recommending non fiction titles in the subject of your choice. The sisters are very glad to have this retired accountant on our staff. Linda keeps us financially on the right page.
Joyce Santopietro joined My Sister’s Books in August 2012. As a retired elementary school teacher and reading consultant in Connecticut, Joyce has a natural love of reading. She and her husband moved to the South Carolina coastal region to join relatives and enjoy the beach and golf courses. Joyce is a member of the Ginger Book Club and River Club Reading Group. Her favorite author is Pat Conroy because he writes a good story that also raises awareness about a social topic or human condition. Joyce likes to read historical fiction for the same reason; you get a good story and learn something about history in the process. Recent reads include Caleb’s Crossing by Geraldine Brooks and A Paris Wife by Paula McLain.

Our Quilt is the “silent sister,” but she’s always there to hide our clutter, add interest to her surroundings and remind us of a cherished handicraft. When you visit My Sister’s Books, be sure to take a look at the quilt made by volunteers (Carole Anderson, Kay Gilligan, Kathe Lovene, Barbara Logan, Bess Long, Janice Powers, Ginny Smith, Eileen Snell, Peggy Stahlberger, Kay Travis and Nancy Van Buren) from Friends of Waccamaw Library (FOWL). Bess won the quilt in a FOWL fundraising raffle in 2006 and it has graced our store ever since. “I think I bought about 20 raffle tickets to support FOWL children’s programs—and I really wanted that quilt!” Bess remembers.
